Weekly Wrap – 7th March 2016

Hi I am Tom McLeod, Co-Founder of McLeod Governance.

This is what I would be thinking about this week.

Who is that person that has had the biggest impact on your risk and audit career?

Just by asking that question I know that you are already starting to think about who that person may be.  Obviously I am not asking you to tell me who that person is and nor am I going to tell you who that person is for me.

What I want to share with you though is the criteria that has made that person have the biggest impact on my career.

Firstly there were a person of enormous integrity.  Integrity was not only something they said but it was something that they did.

I saw them exclude themselves from situations where it was to their personal detriment in the short term but to the long term benefit with regards to how they were perceived within the organisation.

After integrity the second area was around professionalism.

They demonstrated a professionalism in the way that they talked; in the way that they wrote; and even in the way that they worse their clothes – they showed that what they were doing with great seriousness and pride.

And the third thing that that person had was an ability to look over the horizon.

With that ability what they were doing was not only guessing, and assessing, and predicting future risks but they were more importantly setting up future mechanisms for which they could be ready for that change in the environment.

They set up environments where they – and us, as those who worked with them – were better educated.

They set up environments where we had the skills in the team or brought the skills into the team to make us much better.
