Weekly Wrap – 4th September 2014

Hi I am Tom McLeod, Co-Founder of McLeod Governance.

This is what I would be thinking about this week.

Last week we looked at what makes a good Chief Audit Executive.

This week we are going to look at what makes a good risk manager.

All Managers Manage Risk

Now in many respects this is the hardest of all areas for us to look at because all managers manage risk.

Good managers manage risk so to call out what makes a good risk manager is ultimately someone that manages their risks well.

But more precisely what we are looking at today is what makes a good risk management advisor.

And for me there are two key elements here.

Understanding Risk Interconnectivity

One is an understanding of the interconnectivity of risks within the organisation.

No risk is a silo and no manager who is worth their salt should treat their risks as a silo.

Ability to Communicate

The second thing with regards to a good risk manager is the ability to communicate.

By that I don’t only mean by the written word.

What is it that the risk manager in your organisation is doing to either mitigate, eliminate or manage risks?

Sometimes it can be as simple but effective as education.
