Weekly Wrap – 30th April 2015

Hi I am Tom McLeod, Co-Founder of McLeod Governance.

This is what I would be thinking about this week.

Missing the Start of the Internet Revolution

In the mid 1990s I was asked to do a review of e-commerce.

And I distinctly remembering having absolutely no idea what e-commerce was. I had missed the start of the internet revolution that has changed everything about business.

The True Start of the Broadcasting Revolution

I wonder whether we are in a similar moment at the moment as it relates to broadcasting with the recent advent of applications such as Periscope and Meerkat.

What are they?

Well essentially they allow for the live streaming of content via twitter.

The Impact on Audit Training

And why is it relevant for risk and audit?

I wonder whether it is going to fundamentally change how education in both those fields is undertaken.

At the moment education in those fields tends to be for profit.  i.e. A service provider provides the content at a price.  You pay for it.  And you consume it.

With things such as Periscope and Meerkat I do wonder whether we are going to start seeing situations where everyone starts being teachers of everyone else.

This has fundamental implications for quality but also for the profitability of the professions we hold dear.

The Challenge to the Institute of Internal Auditors

What role does the Institute of Internal Auditors, for instance, have in that new world?

How will their conferences be covered?

I have advocated that national and international conferences of bodies such as the Institute should have live twitter streaming.

If you think about it only 1% of the membership base will be able to get to the International Conference in Vancouver in a couple of weeks.

Educating the 99%

What about the other 99%?

Applications such as Periscope and Meerkat will allow us to reach out to all.

And more importantly to educate all!
