Weekly Wrap – 21st October 2015

Hi I am Tom McLeod, Co-Founder of McLeod Governance.

This is what I would be thinking about this week.

Recently in a presentation I was asked a question that I have never received before – it was:

What would you do differently in your audit career?

It stopped me in my tracks to be very honest and it made me consider then and now what the answer should be.

My answer on the day was that I would seek to continue to engage – or engage with them more than I had done throughout my career.

The best audit report is sometimes the audit report that is not written – it is the controls that improve as a result of engagement with people early on.

Now that I have had the time to reflect on the question the other thing that I would add is that the biggest mistake – the biggest thing that I would change in my career – is that I would be more open to how we communicate our messages.

For too long I sat in the world of having to communicate by a written – and sometimes hard copy – report.

That is obviously beneficial for some people but not for all; and especially in these days when we can communicate and consume our information in many different ways.

This is a topic that we have addressed a number of times in the Weekly Wrap and we will continue to look at.

My challenge for you as it is my challenge for myself is:

How can I get my message across?

How can I continue to engage with those that need my counsel?
