Weekly Wrap – 20th November 2014

Hi I am Tom McLeod, Co-Founder of McLeod Governance.

This is what I would be thinking about this week.

Reaching Out for Assistance

Over the last month or so we have been contacted by senior audit people in Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, Iraq and Mongolia.

The reason why I raise this is in essence the flip side of the argument last week about which countries are standing up to be counted in pushing internal audit forward.

There are so many countries crying out for basic level guidance that we can provide on a case by case basis as we have with those countries that we have just mentioned.

But what is being done for instance in moving forward the profession of governance in Afghanistan?  A country that has been blighted by wars for generations.

If we cant help those that are most in need what then are we here to do?

And if we can answer that in the affirmative what is it that we can do?

Are Checklists Enough?

Is it just giving over checklists? Or is it giving of advice?

With those four countries that I mentioned I took the opportunity not only to provide advice but to learn about audit in different environments.

And ultimately that is the great two way street at play here.

We may think that we know everything about audit but learn about it in a different context – a context where you are never likely to operate and you will really understand what is audit and what is governance.
