Weekly Wrap – 19th March 2015

Hi I am Tom McLeod, Co-Founder of McLeod Governance.

This is what I would be thinking about this week.

Who is the best auditor that you have ever worked with or for?

That question was asked of me in a session this week and it made me stop and think.

Now the person that I have in mind I am not going to name.  They know who they are and I will be forever in their debt having worked closely with them.

But in answer the question I sought to identify the characteristics of a great auditor.  And for me there are three key things that one needs to keep in mind.

Decent Human Being

First and foremost they are a decent human being.

You cannot be a good auditor with a nasty personality.

Thirst for Knowledge

Secondly they had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge – not just of audit; not just of the business but of life.

They always wanted to understand why something was happening.

And thirdly they had great resonance.

Now this wasn’t only within the business but again within life in general.

They could communicate with – and indeed did communicate with – all levels within the organisation.

Looking out for those characteristics has always driven me in my recruitment processes.

I doubt that I will ever find another person that was the equivalent of the best person that I have ever worked with – but I will never stop looking.
