Weekly Wrap – 19th February 2015

Hi I am Tom McLeod, Co-Founder of McLeod Governance.

This is what I would be thinking about this week.

Booming Business

In this last day I found myself standing in a lift with a gentleman who had a large bin full of shredded material that he was taking to be destroyed.

I struck up a conversation with the gentleman and asked him whether business was improving and he said to me that business had never been busier – to the point that the facility to which he was taking the shredded paper was at beyond capacity.

It made me stop and think as to why people would be shredding documents and why is that business continuing to boom.

Is it now that we only print out – in this so called paperless world – the important documents and it is those documents we don’t want others to see.

Impact of Shredding on Risk and Audit

From a risk perspective it also made me stop and think – if we are shredding documents what narrative does that allow us to create when we go back to seek to understand how risks were developed and defined.

The shredding business is obviously a booming business but is also very worrying that a discipline such as risk – and audit – is making sure that the narrative is not only defined from that person who speaks the loudest but that it is that which is based on real, and un-shredded, evidence.
