Weekly Wrap – 10th April 2014

Hi I am Tom McLeod, Co-Founder of McLeod Governance.

This is what I would be thinking about this week.

What Tricks Are Used in Fraud Interviews?

A couple of weeks ago we had a weekly wrap that looked at the emotions involved in interviewing someone involved in a fraud interrogation or interview.

That post generated an enormous amount of interest and one of the questions that I had was what are some of the tricks that I use in a fraud interview?

Now there are some that I will always keep in my back pocket so that I can use the element of surprise but there are two that I was taught that I have used to great advantage and I want to share them with you today.

He Who Controls The Water Controls The Room

The first one is he who controls the water controls the room.

When you are in a tense situation such as a fraud interview I always place the water on my side of the table so that the person that I am interviewing – who is already under an enormous amount of strain – has to ask of me, the interviewer, for the most basic of human needs which is water.

Now for the avoidance of doubt, I always will give that water and I will always offer water.

When Was The Last Time You Disagreed Over a Cup of Tea?

The second thing is if I want to decrease the tension in the room I offer a cup of tea.

The theory here is when was the last time you have had an argument or disagreement over a cup of tea?

Culturally in many countries around the world tea represents a harmonious occasion so to offer tea in an environment such as a fraud interview can actually disrupt the dynamics of that room to your advantage.

These are but two of my so called tricks and I am sure that there are many others that others are aware of.

Hopefully you never have to be on the receiving end of them.
